Located in the center of Onancock directly across from the town park and the historic Cokesbury church this gorgeously renovated home is perfectly located just steps from distinctive shops and galleries, award-winning restaurants and our busy town harbor.

Founded in 1680, Onancock is an increasingly popular cruising and tourist destination that still retains all the charms of a waterfront village.

12 Market St is a center hall colonial home that was built by the William Wessel family around 1920 and is surrounded by Onancocks history.   Directly behind this home is the oldest home in town built around 1760 and newly renovated.  To the left is a home that once served as the Onancock Town Hall and is now a private residence.  Across the street is the town park and the historic Cokesbury Church, built in 1884.  The home is just one block to the town harbor whose marina is now filled with the tugboats, work barges and pleasure boats that have replaced the skipjacks and steamboats of earlier centuries. A deep water boat slip has been rented for the new owner in the Mt. Prospect marina in Onancock

RENOVATION:

So many neighbors have watched the work at the house for months.  Heres what has been happening:  This home has always been a lovely warm space.  The updating of the home was intended to maintain that tradition while enlarging the views, the light, and the space.

The back porch was made into a large kitchen with room for family meals.  The dining room was kept formal but designed with the option to use it as a downstairs bedroom with a full bath that is wheelchair accessible.

The five upstairs rooms were made into three larger bedrooms and two baths. Two rooms were opened to roof height, exposing the original stain glass windows.  A loft now provides a private workspace on the third floor.  The master bath includes a ceramic-lined shower and a classic soaking tub.

The front of the house now enjoys a full southern-style porch to supplement the side and back porches.  Also added is a second floor deck to catch a view of the creek and provide a private spot for relaxing.

The house has been professionally landscaped with perennials that will grow into an elegant and easy care garden.

DETAILS THAT IMPRESS:

  • The homes major systems have all been replaced.  Electrical, insulation, HVAC and plumbing are all brand-new.  The state of the art flex plumbing pipes are guaranteed not to freeze---a welcome relief for homeowners.
  • The new heating and air-conditioning is now divided into three zones---kitchen, downstairs and upstairsfor maximum efficiency and comfort.
  • The house has been wired for telephone, cable and computers.
  • Solid maple custom cabinets from Lancaster County have been thoughtfully designed with the gourmet cook in mind.
  • Paint colors in the house are custom and have been carefully chosen to reflect the homes warmth and history.
  • Custom wooden blinds offer privacy and elegance.
  • Porch railings are made of a high grade composite for superior stability.
  • The back porch and upstairs decking is top of the line Ipe a Brazilian walnut hardwood--- which has a lifetime guarantee.
  • Home has bulls eye and  triple crown molding with 12 inch baseboards in many rooms.
  • The downstairs has been thoughtfully designed with the option to become easily wheelchair accessible in the future.

The renovation began in December, 2005 and was completed in December of 2006 just in time for the Onancock Christmas tour, where it was a crowd favorite.  The owners are very proud to have restored this treasured piece of Onancock history.

DOWNSTAIRS FEATURES:

Enter through the wide front porch into the gracious foyer of this classic center hall colonial and look around this wonderfully open and light-filled space.   To your left is the large living room with its original wood floors, recessed lights and wood-burning fireplace with a marble surround.  On one side glass doors exit onto the side porch, on the other, a half wall topped by custom columns separate the living room from the foyer and kitchen.

In many ways the kitchen is the heart of this house. Granite counters, of course and top of the line appliances. The stove and gas cooktop are Jenn Air, the refrigerator is Amana, the whisper quiet dishwasher is Bosch.  The Sharp convection oven is also a microwave.

The solid maple cabinets are custom designed and include a built in step back cupboard.  A platter rack, wine rack, a specially designed herb drawer, an appliance garage, cutlery and tray dividers and automatic drawer closings are all carefully placed for the cooks convenience.

The elegant dining room has a gas burning fireplace. Should you desire this room can also function as a downstairs master.

The downstairs bath has Italian marble counters, Italian tile and is fully wheelchair accessible.

The hallway has both a closet and a front loading Whirlpool washer and dryer.

UPSTAIRS FEATURES:

Ascend the wide oak staircase to a generous landing that is just the place to curl up on a sofa with a good book. Its French doors open onto a deck with relaxing waterviews---the perfect place to enjoy your private sunset.

If you prefer a view of the town park while you relax place your sofa at the other end of the hallway.

To your right is a master bedroom that has been opened up to let in lots of light and showcase the original stained glass window.   The loft above opens up many options---home office, hobby workspace, or playroom.

The master bath has imported Italian marble counters, Italian tile, a custom glass enclosed shower and an elegant slipper tub.

Across the hall there are two more bedrooms that can be used separately or as a second master suite.  The Jack and Jill bathroom between these bedrooms also has imported Italian tile, granite counters and a luxurious 3 foot deep soaking tub in addition to the shower.
