BOATERS DREAM IN HISTORIC BAYSIDE TOWN OF ONANCOCK, VA
Historic home (early 1800's) "Captain Thomas Johnson Homestead"
Boathouse, lush gardens, newly restored historic garden house, 3400+ square feet of luxury living in a home that has 1800 sq feet of carefully restored history and 1600+ square feet of new space with all the amenities one expects of a home of this caliber.
Details of this exceptional home to follow but first some history:
Originally, prior to 1800, it was part of the “John Smith’s Lot”. Later, it was purchased as part of the Captain Thomas R. Johnson Homestead in 1851. This waterfront homestead included most of the town land bordering the western end of the North prong of the Onancock Creek, and is the only "deep water" ( 7 ft. + or-) at mean low tide in Onancock.
Captain Johnson was a very successful waterman, vessel operator and businessman who traveled extensively and regularly to Baltimore, Washington, New York City and Philadelphia. His Federal style, 3 story "split levels" house had 4 bedrooms, 2 "One Room Deep" living areas and an English basement/kitchen. The house was reconfigured a bit and also remodeled by those who purchased the property in the early 1900's. Updated oak flooring covered the original wide tongue and grove pine planks and at that time a sun porch and a screened porch were added to each side.
Through the years Captain Johnson was considered one of the Eastern Shore of Virginia's "Most Prominent Citizens". He eventually purchased a 2nd home on Market Street, which became the Williams Funeral Home. The Captain, however, continued to deliver many thousands of barrels of oysters, "round (white)" potatoes and sweet potatoes from this site up until his death at the age of 97 in 1906. He was the first to export sweet potatoes from the Eastern Shore and continued to drive loads of potatoes daily to the wharf even at the age of 95. Captain Johnson was forever considered one of the town's "Young Men" never wearing eyeglasses and being considered a "man of vitality" well into his 90s. In 1891 after returning from New York, The Peninsula Enterprise reported, "The energy of the Captain is a lesson for the young men of the country which could be accepted by them with profit."
