THE GRANGE is an historic 109 acre seaside farm that has been in the family since the 1760's!  2500 sq ft  home.   45 acres  are currently farmed.

The present owner is the stepson of the woman whose great grandfather in 1798 married  Susanna Davis who owned the property.  Her second husband, Levin Hyslup, was a soldier in the Revolutionary War.  Levin enlisted as a private in 1775 and was discharged three years later “at camp at Valley Forge”.

The house is of an Eastern Shore architectural style known as Big house, Little house, Colonnade and Kitchen.  Most houses of this style are built in a straight line but this house is built in the shape of an L.

The kitchen is the original part of the house consisting of one room with an attic. It is not known when the colonnade was built but it was hereby the time George W. Hyslup was born in this room in 1842,

Between 1842 and 1871 the little house was added.  It is not quite two full stories.  The second floor room dimensions are the same as the living room below it, but has a peaked roof with four dormers and a ceiling height of 6’4”.      In front of the fireplace the living room has a “potato hole”   ---built under the floor to keep vegetables from freezing  in the winter.  It’s now covered up but still exists beneath the floorboards.

The big house is three stories including the attic and was built around 1875.  Its Victorian details are a perfect representation of an upswing in the family fortunes.

One of the shore's most magnificent magnolia's was planted by the family in 1872. Two family graveyards on the property.

THE GRANGE has been in one family for 246 years now and surely that is an American story few families can match. The home was never a fancy house but it has been well loved for many generations.

THE GRANGE is now ready for new owners to add their own stories to this very special place.
